New parameters

sp_configure

Parameter Name                 Default              Memory Used Config Value         Run Value            Unit                 Type
 ------------------------------ -------------------- ----------- -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- ----------
dump history filename             dumphist                    0     dumphist             dumphist         name                 dynamic
enable concurrent dump tran              0                    0            0                    0         switch               dynamic
 enable dump history                      0                    0            1                    1         switch               dynamic

Dump configuration

Save configuration files

Documentation says : "The dump configuration command allows you to back up the Adaptive Server configuration file, the dump history file, and the cluster configuration file. "

Syntax : dump config[uration] [with { file = (file_option, file_option...)} } ]
but in fact good syntax is : dump configuration to "path"

Example :

dump configuration to "/sybase/dump"

Option 'server_configuration': File dumped to '/sybase/dump/SD_TP_DBA.cfg_20121005.125058' successfully.
Option 'dump_history': File dumped to '/sybase/dump/dumphist_20121005.125058' successfully.

Create configuration

Documentation says : "Adaptive Server 15.7 ESD #2 introduces dump configurations that define the options to create a database dump. Backup Server then uses the configuration to perform a database dump. Use the dump configuration to create, modify, or list dump configurations, then use dump database or dump transaction with the dump configurations to perform dumps."

Enable dump operations with dump configurations

sp_configure "enforce dump configuration", 1

Create dump configuration

Syntax :
sp_config_dump [@config_name = ‘configuration_name’
[, {
[@stripe_dir = ’stripe_dir_name’,]
[@ext_api = ’external_api’,]
[@num_stripes = ’number_of_stripes’,]
[@retry = ’number_of_retries’,]
[@blocksize = ’number_of_bytes’,]
[@compression = ’compression_level’,]
[@retain_days = ’number_of_days’,]
[@init = ’[noinit | init]’,]
[@verify = ’[header | full]’,]
[@notify = ’[client | operator_console]',]
[@backup_srv_name = backup_server_name’,]
} | [‘delete’]
] ]

sp_config_dump "test_cfg", @stripe_dir="/sybase/dump", @num_stripes='5', @retry='1', @compression='4'

The change is completed. The option is dynamic and ASE need not be rebooted for the change to take effect.

List dump configuration

sp_config_dump

 dumpconfig
 ----------------------
 test_cfg

sp_config_dump "test_cfg"

 optionname  optionvalue
 ----------- ----------------------------------
 stripe_dir  /sybase/dump
 num_stripes 5
 retry       1
 compression 4

(1 row affected, return status = 0)

Modify dump configuration

sp_config_dump "test_cfg", @compression='100'

The change is completed. The option is dynamic and ASE need not be rebooted for the change to take effect.

Note:
"Compression levels of 100 and 101 provide a faster, more efficient compression mode, with 100 providing faster compression and 101 providing better compression. If you do not specify compress level, Adaptive Server does not compress the dump."

Dump with configuration

Wrong syntax (from documentation) : dump database database_name using config[uration] = config_name ...
Correct syntax: dump database database_name using config = config_name ...

we insert some data in a table (to test in next section the load tran until time...) :

sp_helpdb test_db

name    db_size       owner dbid created      durability lobcomplvl inrowlen status
 ------- ------------- ----- ---- ------------ ---------- ---------- -------- --------------
 test_db      400.0 MB sa      15 Aug 20, 2012 full                0     NULL no options set

(1 row affected)
device_fragments               size          usage                created                   free kbytes
 ------------------------------ ------------- -------------------- ------------------------- ----------------
 SD_TP_DBA_dest_dummy_db_data02      300.0 MB data only            Aug 20 2012 12:16PM                 304280
 SD_TP_DBA_dest_dummy_db_log02       100.0 MB log only             Aug 20 2012 12:16PM       not applicable

 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
log only free kbytes = 101984

(return status = 0)

use test_db

create table test_table ( a int identity, b datetime default getdate(), c varchar(20))

insert test_table(c) values ("test1")

(1 row affected)

select * from test_table

 a           b                   c
 ----------- ------------------- --------------------
           1 Oct  5 2012 12:04PM test1

(1 row affected)

then we dump the database :
